Smaller ones (fewer needles in the cartridge, such as 25/7) are great for filling in narrow areas, shading fine details and creating texture. As a general rule, you should use the largest magnum that the tattoo you are doing allows. If you choose to use a small SEM to cover a large area, it will be more difficult to achieve a uniform fill or smooth transition. For example, if you use a size 7 magnum to fill an entire tribal style sleeve, it will take forever and cause unnecessary damage to your client's skin. If you do a coloured background, the application of colour will be uneven and cause the tattoo to heal unevenly. (It's like painting a large wall in a room with a picture brush.) Not only are the needles marked 0.35(#12) larger than those marked 0.30 (#10), but also the distances between the needles in their configuration are larger. The smallest needle size of 0.25 (#08) will allow you to make fine details, for example in portraits It allows for several passes over the skin, which minimises skin damage but will slow down your work.
